About the Webinar

More than three years into Sudan’s devastating war, the conflict has entered another dangerous phase without effective diplomatic initiatives to end the war. Attention has increasingly turned to al-Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan State, prompting warnings from UN officials and humanitarian organizations that another acute humanitarian and human rights emergency may be unfolding. Drone warfare has also become an increasingly prominent feature of the war, with attacks striking military targets as well as the civilian infrastructure on which communities depend, including electricity networks, water facilities, fuel depots, markets, and medical facilities.

Arab Center Washington DC in partnership with the Abdulaziz Said Chair for Peace and Conflict Resolution at American University’s School of International Service (SIS) are convening a webinar to examine the latest developments in Sudan’s war and the direction the conflict may take. Panelists will assess the mounting humanitarian cost, barriers to protecting civilians and delivering humanitarian assistance, the growing use of drone warfare, and the risk that the country’s military division could become increasingly entrenched. The discussion will also examine how foreign involvement continues to fuel the conflict and shape its trajectory, prospects for US-led mediation, and the likelihood that current diplomatic efforts will succeed.
