The Editor plays a central role in ACW publications on democratization, human rights, and justice in the Arab world, regional conflict and peacemaking, and US foreign policy toward the Middle East and North Africa. The role involves copyediting, fact-checking oversight, and development of ACW Viewpoints, Policy Analyses, research papers, book reviews, reports, newsletters, and other formats. The Editor may also write policy analyses in their area of research expertise.

Key Responsibilities

  • Copyedit and proofread ACW publications for clarity, accuracy, consistency, grammar, style, and readability.
  • Draft and edit publication summaries, infographics, promotional materials, annual reports, online content, social media posts, executive summaries, and newsletters.
  • Write policy analysis papers in areas of research expertise, and contribute to other analysis formats (such as op-eds, videos, briefings, media commentaries, etc.), in consultation with the Director of Publications.
  • Coordinate the publications workflow from edited draft to final publication.
  • Ensure all publications meet editorial standards of high quality, objectivity, consistency, and house style.
  • Coordinate, train, and supervise fact-checkers and interns.
  • Support the Director of Publications in planning weekly publication schedules, identifying authors and topics, and liaising with fellows and contributors.
  • Support Publications department administration and workflow as needed.

Qualification Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field minimum, Master’s degree preferred.
  • At least 3-5 years of editing experience in academic or think tank publications.
  • A proven editor: excellent English language skills and a proven track record as a substance editor and copyeditor; superior proofreading skills.
  • Excellent writing skills and demonstrated mastery of clear, coherent, and evidence‑based writing.
  • Extensive knowledge of international affairs and Middle East studies including history, politics, society, and US foreign policy in the Middle East and North Africa.
  • Strong writing and research skills and great attention to detail.
  • Superior ability to conduct research, check facts online, and vet web sources.
  • Self-motivation; outstanding teamwork ability and time management skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment and creatively solve problems as they arise.
  • Ability to work with technology to disseminate content electronically.
  • Experience in managing relationships and sensitive issues.
  • Experience working with research organizations and think tanks.
  • Good knowledge of the Arabic language and familiarity with transliterating Arabic in English preferred.
  • Experience in publishing books and monographs preferred.
  • Experience in writing reports and analytical articles preferred.
  • Knowledge of nonprofit and/or think tank operations preferred.
